What causes the recent surge in 'super-gonorrhea' cases globally?

Gonorrhea is becoming stronger because it’s learning to avoid the medicine we use to treat it.

Imagine you have a toy that always breaks when you press a red button, but one day, it stops breaking even when you press the red button. That’s like what's happening with super-gonorrhea. The bacteria that cause gonorrhea are like that toy, they used to be stopped by common medicines, but now they're getting smarter and not being affected anymore.

How Did This Happen?

When people take medicine for gonorrhea, most of the bacteria get killed off. But some might survive because they were a little different or lucky, kind of like how sometimes one kid in class doesn’t get sick even when everyone else does.

These surviving bacteria then make new babies (that's what bacteria do), and those babies are now used to the medicine. Over time, more and more of them become used to it, until eventually, most of them don't get affected by the medicine anymore, that’s super-gonorrhea!

Now, doctors need stronger medicine or different ones to treat this new kind of gonorrhea. It's like needing a bigger hammer when your toy becomes harder to break.
