The Physics and Semantics of Penetration

Penetrate means to go into or through something else. Imagine a straw going into a glass of juice. The straw penetrates the liquid because it passes right through it. It is simply about entering or moving inside a material.

Think about poking a finger into a soft pillow. Your finger goes inside the fluffy stuffing. That is penetration. It is not about breaking things, just about going in. If you push a pencil into a block of playdough, the pencil penetrates the dough. The point goes deep inside.

When rain falls on the ground, the water penetrates the soil. It soaks down deep into the dirt so plant roots can drink it. This is different from water just sitting on top like a puddle on a plastic sheet. The plastic sheet stops the water. The soil lets it in.

Think of penetration like a key finding its way into a lock. The key slides in and fits perfectly inside.

So, to penetrate is to move from the outside to the inside of something. It is a gentle push that finds its way through.
