How it works
Imagine you have a piggy bank. In it, there are shillings, which are like big coins worth more than the little ones, called pence.
- 1 shilling is equal to 12 pence
- So, 3 shillings would be like having 3 groups of 12 pence, that's 36 pence
Now you also have 9 more pence, which are like extra little coins.
So altogether, you have 36 pence + 9 pence = 45 pence.
It’s just another way to count your money, using bigger coins and smaller ones, like counting how many sweets you can buy with the coins in your pocket!3 shillings and 9 pence is like having coins in your pocket, some bigger ones (the shillings) and some smaller ones (the pence).
Examples
- A child buys sweets with 3 shillings and 9 pence in a market.
- A farmer pays rent using 3 shillings and 9 pence.
- A merchant receives payment of 3 shillings and 9 pence for goods.
