What is Addison’s disease?

Addison’s disease is when your body forgets how to make some important helpers that keep you strong and healthy.

Imagine your body has a little team that makes hormones, which are like special messengers that tell different parts of your body what to do. One day, this team gets sick or loses its members, they can't make enough hormones anymore. That’s Addison’s disease.

How it works

Your adrenal glands, which are like tiny factories on top of your kidneys, usually make these hormones. But when something goes wrong, those factories slow down or stop working altogether. The body then feels tired, weak, and maybe even a little grumpy, kind of like how you feel after playing all day and forgetting to eat.

What it’s like

Think of it like having your favorite cookie jar suddenly become empty. You expect cookies every afternoon, but one day there are none, that's confusing and makes you feel sad or tired. That’s what happens when your body doesn’t get its usual hormones, it gets confused and feels weaker.
