Addition is when you put together groups of things to find out how many you have altogether.
Imagine you have 3 toy cars in your hands, and you get 2 more toy cars from your friend. Now you can count them all, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! You now have 5 toy cars total. That’s addition, combining groups to find the total.
Like Counting Apples in a Basket
Suppose you’re picking apples from a tree. You pick 4 red apples, and then you pick 3 green apples. To know how many apples you’ve picked, you add them together: 4 + 3 = 7. So now you know you have 7 apples in your basket.
Addition is like giving your hands or your basket a little help to count more easily, just by combining what you already have.
Examples
- If you have $2 and get another $3, you now have $5.
