What is Carbon?
Think of carbon as a building block. It's like the lego piece that can connect to many other pieces. You find it in things like pencils (the graphite), diamonds, and even chocolate! Carbon is super flexible because it can bond with other atoms easily, kind of like how you can hold hands with different friends at playtime.
What is Oxygen?
Oxygen is the breath of life. When you take a deep breath, you're bringing in oxygen from the air. It helps your body make energy, just like a toy car needs batteries to move. You also find it in water, every time you drink water, you’re drinking oxygen and hydrogen, which are best friends that stick together.
Together, carbon and oxygen can form things like sugar, CO₂ (which is what you blow out when you puff on a balloon), and even the air we breathe. They're not magical, they're just really useful little parts of everything around us!
Examples
- A child learns that trees use oxygen and carbon to grow.
- Carbon is like the skeleton of a molecule, while oxygen helps it move.
- We breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.
