What is discontinuity?

A discontinuity is when something changes suddenly, like jumping from one place to another without passing through the middle.

Imagine you're eating your favorite cereal in the morning. You take a big bite, and then, poof!, you’re at school. That’s a discontinuity: you went from being at home to being at school without walking there or taking the bus. It's like skipping steps in a staircase.

Like a Step in the Floor

Think of a staircase. When you walk up, each step is smooth and easy. But if one step is missing, and you suddenly go from one level to the next, that’s discontinuity, it feels different because there’s no smooth path between them.

Or think about your favorite candy. If you bite into it normally, it's soft and sweet. But if someone gives you a crunchy version without warning, that’s like a discontinuity in taste, it changes suddenly instead of slowly.

A Real Example

When you play with your toys, maybe you're building a tower. Each brick goes on top smoothly. But if one brick just appears at the top instead of being placed there, that's a discontinuity, it changed all at once!
