What Is Emotional Dysregulation? | Neurodivergent Magic?

Emotional dysregulation is when your feelings come really fast and feel really big, like a storm that you can’t control.

Imagine you’re playing with your favorite toy, and everything’s perfect. Suddenly, someone takes it away, poof! You go from happy to super sad or angry in the blink of an eye. That’s emotional dysregulation. It feels like a wave crashing over you, and you don’t know how to calm it down.

What It Feels Like

When your feelings hit you hard, it’s like being caught in a big windstorm, you can't see clearly, and everything feels chaotic. You might cry suddenly, yell out of nowhere, or even freeze up and not move at all.

How It Happens

Sometimes, emotional dysregulation happens because your brain is processing feelings differently. It's like having a super-sensitive thermometer, it notices tiny changes in temperature (or mood) and reacts strongly to them. That’s why one little thing can lead to a huge emotional reaction.

It doesn’t mean you’re broken or bad, it just means your feelings are stronger, faster, or more intense than some people’s. And that’s totally okay!
