What is Enceladus?

Enceladus is a small, icy moon that orbits the giant planet Saturn. Imagine it as a fluffy white snowball that never melts.

This moon has a secret. From its south pole, it shoots up huge geysers of water and ice crystals. Think of a soda bottle that has been shaken and then opened. Whoosh! The spray flies into space. This makes Enceladus look like a star with its own little tail.

It is the only moon in our solar system with active geysers.

Underneath its frozen crust, there is a warm, salty ocean. The heat comes from Saturn’s gravity squeezing and stretching the moon, kind of like when you squeeze a stress ball. This squeezing warms the rock and ice, melting some of the water. The pressure builds up until it bursts through cracks in the ice.

Scientists are curious about this moon because that underground ocean might hold the right conditions for tiny life forms, just like the deep oceans on Earth. It is a quiet, frozen world hiding a warm, wet secret.
