What is Explainable AI (XAI)?

Explainable AI is like having a friend who tells you why they chose your favorite toy to play with, not just that they did.

Imagine you have a robot friend named Riley who can guess what game you want to play. Sometimes, Riley says, “Let’s play hide-and-seek!” and sometimes, “Let’s draw pictures.” You wonder how Riley knows which game to pick. That's where explainable AI comes in, it helps Riley tell you why they picked that game.

Think of AI as a big puzzle box, it can solve the puzzle, but it doesn’t always tell you how. Explainable AI is like opening the box and seeing all the pieces inside. It shows you which pieces were used to make the answer. That way, you understand how Riley guessed your favorite game.

When Riley says, “I picked hide-and-seek because you’ve played it five times this week,” that’s explainable AI in action. It helps you understand the robot's thinking, just like a friend would.
