What is kilonovae?

A kilonova is like when two super-dense stars crash into each other and create a giant glowing burst of light in space.

Imagine you have two really heavy toy trucks, the kind that are so full of blocks they feel like they're made of bricks. Now, imagine those trucks zooming toward each other at a speed faster than lightning, then boom! They collide in the middle of the playground and explode with such power that it lights up the whole neighborhood.

That’s what happens with kilonovae, but instead of toy trucks, it's two special stars called neutron stars, which are super tiny but incredibly heavy. When they crash together, they send out a burst of light so bright you could see it from another galaxy!

Why It Glows So Much

When the neutron stars collide, they also throw out a bunch of heavy pieces, like cosmic confetti made of gold and silver. This is why the kilonova glows for a while, just like how a firework shower lights up the sky after it explodes.

It's not magic, it’s just space doing its biggest dance ever!
