What is luminosity?

Luminosity is how bright something shines, like how much light comes out of a lamp or a sun.

Imagine you have two flashlights: one is tiny and dim, and the other is big and super bright. The luminosity is like how much light each flashlight puts out, not just how big it is, but how strong its shine feels from far away.

Like a Light Bulb in Your Room

If you're sitting in your room and turn on a small nightlight, the room gets just a little bit brighter. But if you turn on a regular light bulb, suddenly everything is bright and clear, that’s because it has more luminosity than the nightlight.

Think of stars too! Some are like tiny nightlights in the sky, but others shine so bright they feel like giant bulbs way up high.

Luminosity Everywhere

The sun has a lot of luminosity, which is why we can see it clearly even though it's very far away. Just like how your big light bulb shines more than the small one, even if you're in another room, you still know where it is! Luminosity is how bright something shines, like how much light comes out of a lamp or a sun.

Examples

  1. A light bulb has a certain amount of luminosity, it tells us how bright the bulb is when it's on.
  2. The Sun has high luminosity because it shines very brightly across space.
  3. A campfire has less luminosity than a streetlight, so it doesn't shine as far.
