New Year is when we say goodbye to one year and welcome another with a big celebration.
Imagine you have a favorite toy that you play with every day, like a ball or a train set. At the end of the year, it's time to put that toy away for a little while, and get out a new one. That’s kind of what happens with New Year! We finish one year (like a big game) and start another year (a new game).
How we know when the year changes
We use something called a calendar, which is like a special chart that tells us when days, weeks, and years go by. When the last day of December passes, it means the new year, January 1st, has arrived! People often count down to this moment with excitement, like waiting for your favorite show to start.
Why we celebrate
We love celebrating because it’s fun! It gives us a chance to say “thank you” for all the good things that happened in the past year and to look forward to what might come next. Sometimes people wear special clothes or even light up the sky with fireworks, like little explosions of color above our heads!
Examples
