What is personification?

Personification is when we give things that aren't people traits or actions like humans do.

Imagine your favorite stuffed animal, let's say it's a bear named Benny. When you talk to Benny, you might say, "Benny is smiling at me," even though he’s just a soft toy. That’s personification! You're giving Benny the action of smiling, which people do.

How It Works in Stories

In stories, writers use personification to make things more fun and easier to understand. For example, they might say, "The wind was dancing around the trees." The wind isn't really dancing, but it feels like it is! This helps you picture what's happening, just like when you imagine your toys coming to life.

Why We Use It

We use personification because it makes things feel more real and friendly. When we say a sun is "laughing" or the moon is "sleeping," it helps us connect with nature in a playful way, just like when you pretend your toys are having adventures with you!
