Imagine you are riding in a car on a bumpy road. Even though you cannot see the bumps under the wheels, you can feel them through the steering wheel shaking your hands. Dark matter is like those invisible bumps in space.
The universe is full of stars and planets that we can see with telescopes. But when scientists watch these stars dance around their galaxy centers, they move too fast. It is as if the car is going incredibly fast on a smooth road without shaking at all. There must be something else pushing against them to keep them from flying off into the void.
The Invisible Stuff
This something is not gas or dust because we can see those with light. It does not shine, reflect, or block light like normal matter. Instead, it pushes. It has weight and gravity just like the things we know. Scientists call this extra weight dark matter.
How We Know It Is There
Think of a carousel at an amusement park. If you spin fast enough, your arms want to fly outward. But if someone holds onto your hands, you stay in place. The stars in our galaxy are like those spinning kids. They should fly away because they move so quickly. But dark matter acts like the invisible hands holding them together.
We cannot touch dark matter directly yet. It is like trying to catch smoke with a net that has very large holes. Most of it passes right through us and our Earth every second without noticing. We only know it exists because we can see its effect on the stars and light around it.
