What is zero?

Zero is like having nothing in your hand, it’s the number we use when there are no things to count.

Imagine you have a basket full of apples. If you take all the apples out, the basket is empty. That's what zero feels like, no apples, no toys, no cookies. It’s just empty, and that’s perfectly fine!

When You Start Counting

When we count things, we usually start with 1. But sometimes, we need to say “not even one”, that's when zero comes in handy.

Think of a cookie jar. If there are no cookies left, you can say the jar has zero cookies. It’s like saying, “I didn’t get any cookies today.” That’s not sad, it’s just the truth!

Zero is Also a Space

Zero isn’t just for counting, it can be a placeholder too! Like when we write numbers: 10, 20, or even 100. The zero in those numbers helps us know where the ones and tens are.

So whether you're counting cookies or writing big numbers, zero is there to help, just like your favorite toy that sits quietly beside you when you’re playing with others. Zero is like having nothing in your hand, it’s the number we use when there are no things to count.
