What Makes a ‘Poem’ Different from a ‘Song’?

A poem is like a story told with special rhythm and feeling, while a song is that same story made to be sung along with music.

Imagine you have a favorite toy, maybe a teddy bear or a ball. A poem is like telling your friend about how much you love your toy, using pretty words and pauses just right so it feels extra special. It's the way you talk when you're really excited or thoughtful.

Now think of that same story being turned into a song, maybe you're bouncing to music while saying those same words. You could be clapping, singing, even dancing! A song has music and is usually made for people to sing together, like in a car ride or during a party.

How They Feel Different

A poem lives on the page, it's all about how it sounds when you read it out loud. It might have rhymes that make your heart go thump-thump.

A song, though, is made to be heard with music and often has a melody that makes you want to sing along or tap your feet. You can listen to a song anywhere, on the radio, in a video, or even from your favorite cartoon!
