What Makes a Volcano Erupt Violently?

A volcano erupts violently when pressure builds up inside it and suddenly escapes.

Imagine you have a bottle filled with soda, the kind that fizzes up when you open it. Now, if you shake the bottle really hard and then pop the cap off, the soda rushes out in a big splash! That's like what happens inside a volcano.

Inside a volcano is molten rock, also called lava, along with gases and steam. When these things are trapped deep underground, they can't move freely, it's like the soda in the bottle before you open it.

Over time, more and more pressure builds up because gas bubbles form and push against the rocks around them. It’s like shaking that soda bottle again and again.

When the pressure is too much, it can't stay trapped anymore, boom! The top of the volcano cracks open, and out pours lava, ash, and gas in a violent eruption, just like the soda rushing out when you finally pop the cap off.
