What makes up most of the weight of wings?

Most of a wing’s weight comes from the strong, shiny skeleton inside it, not the skin on top! Think of an airplane wing like a long, thin bird’s arm covered in tight fabric. You might think the big, flat cloth part is heavy, but it is actually very light compared to the bones holding it up.

The Strong Bones

The inside of the wing has two main parts that do all the lifting and carrying. First are the spars, which are like thick beams or tree trunks running from the plane’s body out to the tip. They hold everything together. Second are smaller pieces called ribs. These go across the spars like the rungs on a ladder, keeping the wing the right shape so air flows over it smoothly.

If you have ever played with a cardboard box or a toy car chassis, imagine those stiff parts. The wings of a plane are made of tough metal alloys, mostly aluminum, because aluminum is light but super strong. It does not bend easily when the wind pushes hard.

Why Not Just Skin?

The outside covering is called the skin. It is thin and smooth, just like the skin on your finger or the peel on an apple. If we only had skin, it would rip apart like a balloon popping! We need those solid spars and ribs to take the heavy load of passengers, fuel, and engines. So, while you see lots of wing surface, most of the actual weight is hidden deep inside that sturdy internal frame.
