Whales are like big, swimming cows, they breathe air just like we do. Fish live underwater and don’t need to come up for air. So even though they both swim in the ocean, whales aren't fish. Whales have lungs, fish have gills. That’s why whales can stay on the surface, while fish are always under the water.
Examples
- A whale comes up for air like you do when swimming.
- Fish never stop moving their gills underwater.
- Whales can be seen breathing on the ocean’s surface.
