Flying can feel like being squished inside a giant hug that doesn’t let go, and it happens because of pressure changes.
When you fly on an airplane, the air outside gets thinner as the plane goes up high in the sky. To help you breathe easily, the airplane makes its cabin pressurized, which means it keeps more air inside than outside. But this change can feel like a game of push and pull inside your body.
What happens to your ears?
Your ears are like little balloons filled with air. When the pressure changes, like when the plane takes off or lands, the air inside your ears tries to match the air outside. If it can’t move freely, you might feel pressure in your ears, like someone is pushing on them from the inside. It’s similar to what happens when you suck on a straw and then pull it out, that pop feeling is your ear trying to balance things out!
What about your body?
Your whole body feels this pressure change too. Sometimes, it can make your nose feel stuffy, your ears feel full, or even give you a headache, like when you’re playing with a balloon and it’s hard to blow it up all the way.
But don’t worry! It’s just a little game your body plays during flight. Flying can feel like being squished inside a giant hug that doesn’t let go, and it happens because of pressure changes.
