The pillow (sea ice) keeps some warmth trapped inside.
The Great Freeze Timeline
Long ago, the Earth started to get chilly. Antarctica was already isolated by cold ocean currents. These currents act like a wall, keeping warm water away. This made it easy for ice to build up thick and stay there. The Arctic stayed warmer for a long time because the ocean under the ice still holds heat from deeper water. It took much longer for the Arctic to freeze over completely. So, Antarctica got the cold start, while the Arctic caught up later.
Just like how your backyard freezes before your warm living room, location changes everything.
