Why are our fingers different lengths?

Our fingers are different lengths because they grew in special ways to help us do many things.

Imagine your hand is like a toolbox, each finger is a tool inside it. Just like you need a small screwdriver for tiny screws and a big hammer for heavy nails, your fingers have different jobs. The thumb is short and strong, so it can grab and push easily, like when you hold a toy or reach for a cookie. The index finger is a little longer, it helps you point, count, and tap on things, just like pointing to your favorite color in a picture.

The other fingers are even longer and help you hold bigger things, like a book or a ball. They all started as one piece, but over time, they stretched out in different ways, just like how a rope gets longer when you pull it from both ends, some parts get pulled more than others.
