Sunrises and sunsets are colorful because light travels through more air when the Sun is near the horizon.
Light is like a group of friends walking through the sky. When the Sun is high up, they walk straight and reach your eyes quickly, mostly white or pale yellow. But when the Sun is low, like at sunrise or sunset, their path gets longer, and they have to go through more air.
Air has tiny things in it called particles, like dust or water droplets. These particles are like little filters that change how light looks. As light passes through more air, some of the colors get filtered out, the blue and green, leaving behind red, orange, and yellow.
You can think of it like shining a flashlight through a glass of water with food coloring. The farther the light travels through the water, the more colorful it looks when it comes out on the other side.
So next time you see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, imagine all those little filters working together to make the sky look like a painting!
