Why Are There Black Holes in Space?

Black holes are like cosmic vacuums. When a big star runs out of energy, it collapses in on itself and becomes super dense, so much that not even light can escape. That’s why we call it a black hole! Imagine dropping a tennis ball into the deepest part of a pool: eventually, the water gets pulled all the way to the bottom. A black hole is like that, but with stars and space.

Examples

  1. A star gets so heavy it collapses into a tiny point, like squishing a water balloon until there's no space left inside.
  2. If you drop a rock into the deepest part of an ocean trench, it might create a small vacuum, that’s kind of what happens with black holes in space.
  3. A black hole is like a giant cosmic sinkhole: once something falls in, it can never come out.
