Imagine you're at the edge of a very deep well. If you drop something in, it just disappears, that's like what happens with black holes. Even though they’re super strong and powerful, we don’t see them doing anything exciting from far away because light gets swallowed before it reaches us. It’s kind of like being on the other side of a really loud party, you can’t hear the noise.
Examples
- A black hole swallowing a star, the star just disappears into darkness
- Dropping a ball into a well, you don't hear it hit the bottom
- Light going into a dark tunnel, it doesn’t come back out
