Why Do Your Eyes Go Crossed When You Sleep?

When you are awake, your eyes work like two cameras. They point at the same spot so you see one clear picture. But when you fall asleep, your brain takes a nap too!

The Camera Lens Analogy

Think of your eyes as camera lenses. During the day, they focus tightly on things. At night, your brain tells them to relax and look straight ahead or slightly inward. Sometimes, if one lens gets a little lazy, it turns toward your nose. This is called eye convergence.

Waking Up Crossed

Because your eyes are no longer working together perfectly, you might wake up feeling like everything is doubled. You have two of each person and thing! Usually, within a few minutes, your brain gives them a little "wake up" signal, and they snap back into place. It is just your brain doing its nightly maintenance check.
