What Is a Hiccup?
A hiccup feels like your tummy does a little jump. It happens when the muscle below your lungs gets startled and squeezes tight very quickly.
Why Does It Happen?
Your body has a special door called the epiglottis. It usually opens to let air in when you breathe. When your stomach is full or you drink too fast, this door slams shut suddenly. That slam makes that funny 'hic' sound.
Is It Useful?
Long ago, our animal relatives used their hiccups to help them breathe through water. Some scientists think we still have this old habit! It might be a leftover tool from when we lived near the water.
Examples
- A baby hiccuping while sleeping peacefully.
- Trying to stop hiccups by holding your breath.
