Why Do Phones Automatically Adjust Their Brightness?

Imagine your phone has a tiny detective inside it that watches how bright the world around you is. When it's sunny, the detective tells the screen to be brighter so you can see better. When it's dark, it tells the screen to turn down, like turning off the lights in your room.
