When you sleep, your muscles relax, including the ones in your throat. If your throat gets too narrow or even collapses, air can't flow smoothly through it. This makes the air vibrate like a straw when you blow into it, creating snoring. Some people snore loudly because their throat is especially narrow, or maybe they sleep on their back, which can make things worse.
Examples
- A person who sleeps on their back might snore because their tongue falls back and blocks the airway.
- If someone drinks alcohol before bed, they may snore more loudly, because alcohol relaxes throat muscles even more.
- Children with big tonsils often snore loudly, especially during colds when nasal congestion makes things worse.
