We celebrate New Years at midnight because it’s the moment when one year ends and another begins.
Imagine you have a big clock in your room, like the kind that ticks every second. At the end of December, that clock shows 11:59 PM. Then it ticks once more, and suddenly it’s midnight! That means the old year has gone to sleep, and the new year is now wide awake and ready for all the fun ahead.
Why Midnight?
Think about your bedtime, you go to sleep at night, and you wake up in the morning. It’s like that for years too: one goes to bed (the old year), and the other wakes up (the new year).
Midnight is when we say “goodbye” to the old year and “hello” to the new one, just like how your parents say goodnight and good morning.
A Big Party at Midnight
People love having a big party right when midnight happens. They sing, cheer, and even count down from 10 to 1, “5…4…3…2…1… Happy New Year!” It’s like giving the new year a warm hug to welcome it in.
So we pick midnight because that’s when one year finishes its sleep and another starts its day, and everyone gets to party together!
