When your body has a period, muscles in the uterus squeeze and relax. This helps push out old tissue from inside the womb, but it also causes pain. It's like when you're trying to open a tight jar of jam: you twist really hard, and that hurts.
Examples
- Cramps feel like someone is twisting your insides with a rope.
- It's as if you're having tiny muscle spasms in your lower belly every month.
- Sometimes the pain feels so bad it's hard to focus on anything else.
