Why Do We Get Sleep Paralysis?

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night but felt like you were stuck to your bed? This is called sleep paralysis. It happens because your brain wakes up before your body does.

Why Am I Stuck?

When you sleep, your muscles relax so much that they turn off. Your brain sends a signal saying "no movement please." Usually, this turns off when you wake up. Sometimes there is a lag. You are awake in your head, but your body is still in sleep mode.

What About the Monsters?

Many people see shapes or feel pressure on their chest during this time. This is because your brain is trying to make sense of why your body is not moving. It creates stories and images to explain the feeling. Think of it like a computer screen glitching while a video plays.

Is It Bad?

It feels scary, but it is completely safe. Your brain will eventually send the "move" signal again. When it does, you can wiggle your toes or fingers to wake up fully. This happens to many people and usually goes away on its own.
