Why Do We Have Two Eyes?

Imagine you are holding a toy car. If you close one eye, it is hard to tell exactly how far away the car is from your hand. But if you open both eyes and look at the car with them together, your brain instantly knows its distance. This special ability is called binocular vision.

How It Works

Your two eyes are set slightly apart on your face. Because of this, each eye sees a slightly different picture of the world. When you look at something close, like your nose, the pictures are very different. When you look at something far away, like a mountain, the pictures look almost the same.

Brain Magic

Your brain acts like a super-fast computer. It takes those two slightly different pictures and smashes them together into one 3D image. This helps you catch balls, climb trees, and walk without tripping over rocks. Most predators have eyes facing forward so they can see depth clearly. Prey animals often have eyes on the sides of their heads to see danger coming from anywhere, but we need that depth perception to hunt and move through our world!
