The Highlight Reel
Imagine your life is a movie. Your brain does not save every single second. Instead, it picks the best scenes to show you later. This happens because of something called the peak-end rule.
When you remember a time in your life, you mostly look at two things: the most exciting part and the very last moment. If the party had a huge cake (the peak) and you went home happy (the end), you remember it as wonderful. Even if the party was boring for four hours before that!
Why Childhood Feels Special
Childhood memories feel so bright because big things happened then. Your first day of school, winning a toy, or getting lost in a park were huge events for a small person. These are your peak moments. Because you experienced them with fresh eyes and strong feelings, they stick in your mind better than normal days.
Also, as we grow up, things become more routine. Going to work is just like yesterday. But when you look back at being five years old, everything was new and loud. The brain keeps those colorful moments sharp while letting the boring parts fade away.
Examples
- You remember the huge birthday cake but forget the quiet car ride home.
- A scraped knee feels like a big disaster then, but small now.
- Summer holidays feel longer because you did new things every day.
