Why Does Gerrymandering Look So Weird?

Imagine your town has one big ice cream shop. To make sure everyone gets to vote for the best flavor, you divide the town into small neighborhoods called districts. Each neighborhood picks one representative.

Sometimes, the people who draw the lines can cheat! They might group all their friends together so they win easily every time. This is called gerrymandering.

They do this by making districts that look like weird monsters or snakes instead of neat boxes. If a district has many of their voters packed inside, those voters are safe. If they stretch a thin line of their voters across the map, they can grab just enough votes to win nearby areas too.

It is like playing with puzzle pieces. You want your special pieces in your own spots and keep the other person’s pieces separated so they cancel each other out.
