The Paradox of Infinity Minus Infinity

Imagine you have two bottomless buckets, and we want to pour water from one into the other. You might think the amounts cancel out to nothing, but that only works if both buckets are the exact same size. If one bucket is tiny and the other is huge, the result changes completely.

Two Kinds of Infinity

Think of infinity like an endless row of dominoes. If you have one endless row and remove another endless row, what is left depends on how fast each row grows.

  • If both rows grow at the same speed (like counting by ones), you have nothing left. That equals zero.
  • If one row grows faster (like counting by tens), you still have an endless number of dominoes left over. That stays infinity.

It is like trying to empty an ocean with a teaspoon.

Because infinity is not a fixed number, you cannot just subtract it like normal numbers. You must look at how the infinities behave. Without knowing their growth rate, the answer is undefined.
