Taking carbon dioxide out of the air is like trying to catch a single red marble thrown into a giant stadium.
The air is mostly empty space with only a few gas molecules floating around. Carbon dioxide is very thin and spread out. Imagine a huge beach with just a handful of blue shells scattered over miles of sand. Finding those shells takes a lot of work.
The Tiny Target Problem
The atmosphere is mostly nitrogen and oxygen. Carbon dioxide makes up less than one percent of the air. It is like searching for a specific grain of rice in a massive bowl of popcorn. You have to sift through tons of air to find just a few tiny molecules.
The Sticky Trap
Machines use special filters or sponges to grab the gas. Think of a Velcro pad that only sticks to one type of fabric. The machine blows air over these traps. The traps hold onto the carbon dioxide but let other gases pass through. Then heat or electricity is used to shake the gas off and collect it.
It uses a lot of energy, like shaking a wet towel to dry it.
Because the gas is so spread out, the machines must process huge volumes of air. It is expensive and slow. We are still building better "sponges" to make this easier.
