Why Do Some People Stick With One Party Forever?

Imagine you were born into a family that always wears blue shirts to football games. When someone asks what team you like, you say 'blue' without even thinking about it. That is party identification. It is not just about which policies you like today. It is a deep feeling of belonging.

Most adults pick a side and stick with it for life. Even if the blue team makes mistakes, they still feel proud. This happens because our political party becomes part of who we are. We marry people from the same team, live near them, and listen to the same news. Switching parties feels like losing friends.

We use simple rules to decide how to vote. If a rule comes from our team, we say yes. If it comes from the other side, we say no. This is called motivated reasoning. It saves us time and energy so we do not have to study every single law carefully.
