Why Do We Crave Things That Make Us Unhappy?

What Is It?

Imagine you have a big cookie that tastes amazing right now. But if you wait an hour, you get two cookies! Most kids eat the one cookie immediately because now feels very important. This is called temptation. Your brain has two parts fighting each other. One part wants fun and tasty things immediately. The other part, which grows as you get older, knows that waiting can be better.

Why Do We Give In?

Sometimes the happy feeling of eating the cookie is too strong to ignore. Even if you know waiting is smarter, your tummy rumbles or you see the wrapper shake. You choose the now because it feels good right this second. It is not always bad! Sometimes enjoying what you want immediately makes you happier than being perfect.

How Can We Win?

You can trick your brain by hiding the cookie jar. If you cannot see the tasty treat, it is easier to wait. Grown-ups do this all the time with money and homework. Understanding that your brain likes fast rewards helps you make better choices.
