The Lego Castle
Imagine you build a big castle out of Lego bricks. You call it "The Castle." Now, take it apart. Where did the castle go? It didn't vanish. It just became loose bricks again. You can build a boat or a car with the same pieces. The "castle" was just a temporary name for a specific arrangement of bricks.
The River of Thoughts
Now, think about your thoughts and feelings. They are like leaves floating down a stream. One second you are happy. The next second you are hungry or scared. You are not a solid rock. You are more like a flowing river.
Buddhism teaches that we are a process, not a thing. We change every single second. If you are stuck in the "self" illusion, you are like a kid clutching a melting ice cream cone, worried it will disappear. But you are the whole scoop, not just one flavor. You are the changing mix of sensations, thoughts, and actions.
| Common View | Buddhist View |
|---|---|
| I am a solid box | I am a flowing stream |
| I stay the same | I change every moment |
| My self is real | My self is a useful label |
When you stop fighting the change, you feel less trapped. You let go of the need to be one fixed thing. You become more like water, adaptable and free.
The self is a tool for living, not a cage for being.
Examples
- Riding a bike, knowing the rider is just the action of riding.
- Playing a game, where the player is just a role you play.
