Why Do We Get 'Stuck' Between Sleep and Wakefulness?

What Is It?

Imagine your body is a car and sleep is the ignition turning off. Usually, everything stops smoothly. But sometimes, your brain wakes up before your muscles do. You are awake in your mind, but your body stays asleep.

Why Does It Feel Weird?

Because you can't move, your brain gets confused. It tries to figure out why you are frozen. Often, it invents stories or shapes to explain the silence and stillness. Many people see a shadowy figure in the corner of their room. This is called a hypnagogic hallucination.

Is It Dangerous?

No! It feels scary because your heart beats fast and you might feel pressure on your chest. But you are safe. You cannot actually fall out of bed or float away. After a minute, your body wakes up, and the feeling disappears like a dream fading away.
